Student Spotlight:

Olivia Fee

Salsa Student

Olivia Fee had always been intrigued by salsa dancing, but it wasn’t until she stepped into a Movers and Shakers class that her interest truly blossomed. Despite coming from a structured ballet background, she instantly fell in love with the energy, freedom, and sense of community that salsa offered.

What stood out most in her learning journey were the accessible tools and thoughtful instruction. The videos provided on the app allowed her to review movements at her own pace, while her instructor’s clear and methodical teaching helped reinforce the steps through consistent repetition.

Compared to her past dance experiences, salsa felt refreshingly different—more relaxed, more expressive, and undeniably more fun. It also gave her a great workout while letting her move in a way that felt natural and unrestrained.

One area Olivia continues to explore is the art of following. She recognizes the value of letting go and fully trusting her partner's lead, something that challenges her but excites her growth as a dancer. Beyond technique, the friendships she’s built in class have added a social sparkle to her experience. From post-class outings to shared encouragement, the camaraderie has extended far past the dance floor.

1. What inspired you to take your first salsa class at Movers and Shakers?

I've always been interested in salsa dancing, just never got the chance to do it! I finally attended one of Movers and Shakers' salsa classes and loved it!

2. What strategies have helped you the most in remembering salsa steps and improving your skills?

The videos on the app have helped me so much along with the instructors. My instructor goes at a perfect pace and really drills the movements into our heads.

3. What’s one way salsa has surprised you compared to other activities or hobbies you’ve tried?

I feel like I have a lot more fun in salsa than other activities. I grew up a ballerina, so it is something completely different from what I'm used to and I love that. You are able to move more freely and it makes for good exercise!

4. Imagine you have the power to instantly improve one aspect of your salsa dancing. What would you choose to enhance and why?

I would improve getting better at following. I have realized that I need to fully let go and allow my partner to move me.

5. How have your friendships from Movers and Shakers salsa classes grown beyond the dance floor?

I love the people in my class and occasionally we'll go out for food/drinks! Everybody is so accepting of me and we are all trying together to get better.
