Student Spotlight:
Marissa Cortes
Salsa Student
Marissa had always wanted to learn salsa dancing, and when she finally decided to take the plunge, she discovered Movers and Shakers online and knew it was the perfect place to start.
Salsa dancing has given her something to look forward to outside of her 9-5 job. From bonding with classmates at socials to mastering new moves, Marissa is embracing every moment of her salsa journey.
Marissa shares her salsa dance journey through the following interview questions.
1. How did your interest in salsa dancing begin?
I wanted to finally learn how to dance salsa for social settings. After doing some research and coming across Movers and Shakers online, I knew it would be a great place to not only learn, but also be in a great community. (I was not wrong!)
2. How do you deal with mistakes while learning to dance salsa?
I try my best to push through and laugh at any of my mistakes, but I also make sure to correct any form, counts, etc., to ensure that I improve. Practice definitely makes perfect here.
3. What’s a favorite memory bonding with your classmates outside of salsa class? What made it special?
Making plans to all go out to The Victorian on Thursday and seeing a good amount of us follow through with plans was so special! With all of us commuting far (especially with LA traffic), it was so nice to catch dinner, get to know each other more, and then hit the dance floor to practice.
4. In what ways has dancing salsa improved your life in general?
Dancing salsa has provided me with a sense of excitement and joy outside my 9 to 5 job (people who work from home know it can be repetitive). Overall, my schedule has stayed booked with classes, social events with classmates, and a strong desire to get out there and practice more! The amount of amazing people I’ve met so far is a huge plus.
5. What advice would you offer to someone considering taking salsa lessons?
I would advise anyone who is considering joining salsa to do it without any hesitation. Go into the classes with an open mind, be willing to learn from others, and work through the uncomfortable feeling of making possible mistakes. The most important part is to have fun and enjoy it, those 10 weeks go by way too fast!
